One Story. One Lesson. One Better Week.
I’ve said this for years:
“There are no accidents.”
I don’t necessarily mean that everything happens for a reason.
I mean that sometimes you look backward and see connections you never could have seen looking forward.
I was reminded of that recently when I thought about one of the simplest phrases we use at Partners Mortgage:
“You Matter.”
Two words.
But they stopped me.
Because long before I ever came to Partners Mortgage, that was already how I tried to live.
I grew up watching my mom connect with people.
She cared about them.
She remembered things about them.
She made people feel important.
And somewhere along the way, without consciously deciding to, I became a lot like her.
I’ve spent most of my career talking to people.
Getting to know them.
Remembering their spouses.
Their kids.
What they’re excited about.
What they’re worried about.
What they want their lives to look like.
I’ve always described my business philosophy pretty simply:
“All I do is make friends… and then do business with my friends.”
And then, all these years later, I end up at a company whose message is:
You Matter.
Coincidence?
Maybe.
I’m okay with that explanation, too.
But here’s what I find interesting.
Sometimes the right place doesn’t change who you are.
It recognizes who you already were.
I think that’s true of companies.
Friendships.
Relationships.
Maybe even the work we’re meant to do.
The best fits don’t always require us to become somebody different.
Sometimes they give us a place to become more of ourselves.
This Week, Try This…
Look backward for a minute.
Not to live in the past.
Just to connect a few dots.
What values have followed you throughout your life?
What did you learn from your parents, teachers, mentors or friends that you’re still carrying today?
And where in your life right now do you get to be most fully yourself?
Maybe some things are accidents.
Maybe some things are coincidences.
I don’t know.
